Like most things in life, the answer to that often-asked question is “that depends”. It really depends on you – your personal circumstances, your current and future finances and what you hope to achieve by the move.
You can actually prepare to downsize, often years in advance, by going through the process of clearing and cleaning out, without going anywhere. The plus to this advance process is that you are “in control” and able to decide what stays, what goes and even where it goes. If you have special memorable pieces you’d like to share with family or friends, do it at this time, so that you both can enjoy the process of sharing. Do you have a basement or attic filled with things you just don’t use anymore? This is the perfect time to donate them (if they’re usable). Everyone is always hoping to find that vintage item that’s perfect for the Antique Roadshow, but sadly most don’t, but you’ll never know if you’d don’t start the process now.
